When are Lake Norman property taxes due, and when does interest start?

North Carolina property tax is due on 1 September, and you can pay it at its face amount until 5 January. From 6 January interest starts: two percent for the rest of January, then three quarters of one percent a month. That is the state’s rule, so it holds in all four of Lake Norman’s counties.
When is property tax due in Mecklenburg, Iredell, Lincoln and Catawba counties?
The rule is in the state’s own statute, G.S. 105-360, and it applies to every county and town that levies the tax, so Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville in Mecklenburg, Mooresville, Troutman and Statesville in Iredell, Denver in Lincoln and Sherrills Ford and Catawba in Catawba County all run on it. The statute says the taxes “are due and payable on September 1” of the fiscal year they are levied for, and that they “are payable at par or face amount if paid before January 6 following the due date.”
So for the bills this autumn, 1 September 2026 was the due date and 5 January 2027 is the last day to pay without interest. On 6 January the interest is two percent, for the period to 1 February, and after that it is three quarters of one percent for every month or part of a month until the bill is paid.
The same statute lets a county or a town offer a discount for paying before the due date, but only if its board adopts a schedule by the first of May beforehand and the Department of Revenue approves it. If yours has one, the county’s tax office will say so.
When did Mecklenburg County mail the 2026 bills?
Mecklenburg County mailed its 2026 bills for real property and personal property on Tuesday, 28 July, about 449,000 of them, and its release says they must be paid by 5 January 2027 to avoid interest, with bills paid on or after 6 January charged two percent for January. A property whose value is under appeal is mailed its bill later. The county’s Office of Tax Administration is where you look a bill up and pay it.
The other three counties bill on the same statute and publish their rates and their offices on their own pages: Iredell County, Lincoln County and Catawba County.
What happens to Lake Norman property taxes in January 2027?
A revaluation. Iredell County’s own tax rates page says its next revaluation will be effective for 1 January 2027, and the other three counties are on the same year, which is set out in the answer on the next Lake Norman revaluation. A revaluation resets the assessed value of every property in the county, and each board sets its rate afterwards.
For the bill due now, that changes nothing: it is on the values from the last revaluation, and next year’s will be on the new ones.
Where do you find the rate for your own town?
Every rate that goes into a bill around this lake, the county’s, the town’s, and in Mooresville a school district supplement, is on Lake Norman property taxes, each read off the county’s own chart, with how the bill is worked out from the assessed value. The bill itself is the county’s to calculate, and the county’s office is the one to call about yours.
What this means if you are buying or selling on Lake Norman
Nobody can tell you today what a 2027 bill will be, because the values are being reset and the boards have not set the rates that go with them, as the answer on the next revaluation says.
I can tell you where the difference between two houses comes from. Around Mooresville it depends on the town line and the school district, which is the section of the tax guide worth reading before you compare two addresses, and across the lake it depends on the county, which the four Lake Norman towns compared puts side by side.
