Waxhaw

Waxhaw, North Carolina, from the air.

Waxhaw is the town at the bottom of Union County that people drive to on a Saturday and then start looking at houses in. It was incorporated in 1889 around the railway, the line still runs straight through the middle of it, and the old main street on either side of the track is full of antique dealers, restaurants and the kind of shops that only survive somewhere people actually walk. The name comes from the Waxhaw people, who were here long before the railway or the town.

The reason it matters to a buyer is that Waxhaw is one of the few places on this side of Charlotte that has both: a real centre you can walk to, and the new subdivisions with the land and the schools that brought most people to Union County in the first place. Most towns have one or the other.

From my office in Cornelius it is about forty two miles and an hour, which makes it the furthest town on this site. I say that first rather than last. If you are buying here you are buying into southern Union County, not into Lake Norman, and you should do it because you want to be there.

Read off the Canopy feed on 20 September 2026: 397 homes on the market, a median asking price of $725,000, and about a quarter of them new construction. The largest neighbourhoods by listing count are Lawson, Millbridge and Cureton. Those three are large planned communities with their own amenities and their own fee structures, and they account for a sizeable share of everything for sale in the town, so a Waxhaw search is largely a question of which of them you like.

That is worth slowing down on. In a market like this the association fee, what it covers and what it does not is a bigger monthly number than most buyers expect, and it is filed differently by different firms: some annually, some quarterly, some monthly. The listing pages on this site print it exactly as Canopy holds it, frequency and all, so you are comparing the same thing.

Union County Public Schools is the district for the whole town, which is a large part of why the growth came here, and the assignments do move as the county builds. Confirm today’s with the district before you rely on it.

I have closed six sales in Waxhaw. That is enough to know the difference between the older streets near the track and the newer work out toward Marvin, and I will tell you which one your list is actually describing.

If the Waxhaw price is right but the drive is not, Matthews is twenty minutes closer to Charlotte and a completely different kind of town.

Addresses in Waxhaw are assigned to Union County Public Schools. School assignments change, and the district is the only source that can tell you today's. Confirm it with the district before you rely on it.
